This undated, unattributed, blank postcard is just not another touristic view of Bargate in the early twentieth century: it also provides valuable insights into the marketing of these ubiquitous objects. The reverse includes a publishers' imprint: Cawte & Son, 91 Commercial Road, Southampton and the catalogue number E50063. Once he sold his bookbinding business to H.D. Cox in 1912, George Cawte established a tobacconist and stationery shop with his son. His shop stock book records the range of ephemera he ordered, including postcards whose backs were overprinted with his name.
