corollary. In an age of universal progress, wherever enlightenment ancl knowledge and ignorance and superstition are found confronting each other, it is not difficult to prophesy which must inevitably succumb. But the duration of the struggle—the time which this denouement shall occupy—may be lengthened or shortened, and the sooner we set our hand to the plough the sooner the field will be ready for the sowing, and the sooner we may look for a harvest.
Note.—Since writing the above my attention has been called by the Rev. A. Lowy to the fact that the Anglo-Jewish Association and the Alliance Israelite have sub-ventioned and taken over the Talmud Tora of Damascus, consisting of 450 pupils. This establishment has now the advantage of. modern tutors, and is under the direction of the Ecole de GarAPPENDIX E.
THE JEWISH COMMUNITY AND THE LOCAL SCHOOLS OF SMYRNA.
In answer to a series of questions which the Secretary of the Anglo-Jewish Association circulated among the headmasters of Eastern schools, M. Pariente, the able Director of the Smyrna school, has forwarded the following instructive data:—
Smyrna contains 4,000 Jewish families, and has altogether 33 educational establishments for Jewish children, viz., 24 boys' schools, 8 girls' schools, and a mixed school. Secular instruction is only given in three schools, viz., in the two schools of the Alliance and in one private mixed school. The other schools appear under the designation of Talmud Tora, or
