APPENDIX D.
ON THE HISTORY, THE SOCIAL CONDITION, AND THE LITERATURE OF THE BENI ISRAEL IN INDIA.
The following is the substance of several communications received by the Association from Mr. Abraham Daniel, of Bombay, and Mr. Haeem Samuel, of Poona.
Bombay, 17th April, 1876.
My Dear Sir,
I beg to forward this reply to your nineteen questions sent to us on the 29th December last, through Mr. Gf. S. Mankar, which I hope will furnish you satisfactory information on the points of your inquiry. We, as a community, cannot feel but too deeply grateful to you for the kind interest which you have taken in us so far, and so differently conditioned from
your happy people in England...........
I would request you, in the name of our community at large, to establish schools for our people, and send out teachers and missionaries to educate and enlighten us. We are poor, very poor, and ignorant too, in comparison with the other races in this vast country, and we look to bodies like your Association for our social and moral improvements. Our people are chiefly masons, artizans, and soldiers, and only about 70 to 100 men have learnt English in missionaries' schools, whose salaries as clerks in the Government and other public offices in which they are employed, average from 20 to 120 rupees a month. A few men are employed as hospital assistants.
Since we forwarded our reports for the past year, we have received a donation of 100 rupees from His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales through the Municipal Corporation, and 200 rupees from His Highness the Guicowar of Baroda.
By your kindly taking the above lines into your favourable consideration, we shall be deeply grateful.
I remain, Sir, yours obediently,
Abraham Daniel, Secretary Beni Israel Benevolent Society.
