ANTARCTIC AND SUBANTARCTIC MOLLUSCA
189
Family CARDITIDAE
Southern South American members of this family have been treated in detail in order to understand the systematic and relationships of the Magellan and Falkland Island species. In the past, some of the earlier-described species have been largely neglected and some have been misidentified, so that a review based largely upon type-material may be of value.

Distribution: Kerguelen Island (type); South Georgia; Shag Rocks, South Sandwich Islands; South Shetland Islands; South Orkney Islands; Palmer Archipelago; Bouvet Island; Princess Martha Land; Shackleton Ice-Shelf; Enderby Land; Adelie Land; Ross Sea. Probably circum-Antarctic, extending as far north as South Georgia, Bouvet and
Kerguelen.
It seems very probable that CycZocWz'o Smith described from a single small valve
from the Ross Sea, and C. intermedia Thiele from Gauss Station are only variants of this widely distributed form. Nothing corresponding to mz&zrcfzca has been seen amongst a very large collection of astartoides from the Ross Sea.
