In comparison with the return of 1851 it will be seen that there is an increase ron the whole district of 153, but that this increase arises from six parishes which alone shew an increase, the other fifteen shewing a decrease. This state of things is due, in many of the parishes, to the fact that house accommodation is deficient, causing the labourers to reside in the neighbouring parishes. Many instances exist where labouring men walk from four to twelve miles a day to their daily toil; being compelled to live in Alton through .want of house accommodation in the parishes where their labour lies and to which they belong. The number of houses in the district is 2519, giving an average of 4.7 persons to each house. In some of the small parishes the average is much greater ; for example, Medsted shews an average of seven, though it possesses no large establishments to qualify this large average. This aspect' of the recent census unmistakably points to the fact thai cottage accommodation in many of the purely run "ishes is much required.
