Date:
00/11/1848
Content:
Letter from John Ponsonby, first Viscount Ponsonby, [British ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary at Vienna], to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston: he has received Palmerston’s instructions and he will immediately send Mr Samuel to Olmutz with instructions to speak to Wessenberg. The Austrians are still determined to fight for Lombardy if necessary. Metternich has no influence in Austria. The Camarilla is a word much used in Austria by the head Republicans but well informed men know that affairs are directed by Windisch Gratz. He thinks Presburg will soon be attacked by the Austrians. There are some deserters from the Hungarians to the Imperial colours. Nov 1848 The letter is marked “Private”
