Letter from John Ponsonby, first Viscount Ponsonby, [British ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary at Constantinople], to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston: he sends a report of a conversation between Captain Williams and Count Nugent that Sir Charles Smith had given orders not to intervene in the retreat of Ibrahim Pasha. There is still the opportunity to attack Ibrahim’s army. 16 Dec 1840 The letter is marked “private”. The docket notes that it was received on 14 January 1841
