Letter from John Ponsonby, first Viscount Ponsonby, [British ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary at Constantinople], to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston: he sends under separate covers [not present] two reports Messrs Laudert and Steindal from Syria. He also sends news of the losses and disastrous state of the Egyptian Army [not present]; Mehemet Ali is without means for resistance and nothing can save him but the French party in England. 4 Nov 1840 The letter is marked “Private”. The docket notes that it was received on 29 November 1840.
