Letter from John Ponsonby, first Viscount Ponsonby, [British ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary at Constantinople], to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston: Sir Charles Smith has asked that Lady Ponsonby’s nephew, Captain Edward Bagot, military secretary to Sir Alexander Woodford, be sent to Syria. Ponsonby believes he genuinely has the merit required; Sir Charles Smith was not aware of the family connection. Ponsonby hopes Palmerston will be able to give him an appointment. 3 Nov 1840 The letter is marked “Private”. The docket notes that it was received on 29 November 1840.
