Letter from John Ponsonby, first Viscount Ponsonby, [British ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary at Constantinople], to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston: Ponsonby asks if some sort of honour might be granted to Colonel Hodges for his service in Egypt. 23 Oct 1840 It is noted on the docket that the letter was received on 21 November 1840. Palmerston has noted in pencil on the docket: “What could be done for him. P.” Enclosed is a note on what could be done for Hodges, which is a recommendation for a brevet rank of major.
