Letter from John Ponsonby, first Viscount Ponsonby, [British ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary at Constantinople], to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston, sending a letter from Colonel Sheil and a letter from Mr Cartwright in reply to Ponsonby’s suggestion that an address be made to the Queen. 14 Jul 1840 Enclosed are: (i) an extract of a letter from Colonel Justin Sheil, Erzurum, to John Ponsonby, first Viscount Ponsonby, with reports of supplies being sent to Baghdad, reportedly to build a bridge, of the dismissal of the governor of Bushire, and the chances of restitution from the Hajee, 13 May 1840 (ii) A letter from Mr Cartwright, Pera, to John Ponsonby, first Viscount Ponsonby, concerning a meeting of the principal residents relating to an address to the Queen, 7 Jul 1840
