PP/GC/PO/361 Letter from Lord Ponsonby to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston, recommending that support be given to the newspaper, L'ECHO DE L'ORIENT, 11 December 1838
Letter from John Ponsonby, second Baron Ponsonby, later first Viscount Ponsonby, [British ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary at Constantinople], to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston: he encloses a Smyrna newspaper, L'ECHO DE L'ORIENT. It contains an article about Egypt which is worth reading. Palmerston could speak to Reschid Pasha and ask him to encourage a newspaper which so zealously and ably supports the Porte. Ponsonby is informed that this newspaper receives no support, whilst support is given to another, LA GAZETTE DE ?SMYRNA, which is subject to French influence. 11 Dec 1838 It is noted that the letter was received on 3 January 1839. Enclosed is a copy of the L'ECHO DE L'ORIENT, published in Smyrna, in French. 8 Dec 1838
