Date:

Content:
Letter from William Lamb, second Viscount Melbourne, Downing Street, to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston: he will see by the enclosed that the [?Marquis] is by no means satisfied; the core point is not Sir John Campbell missing the appointment but McNeill’s getting it. 12 Jul 1835 Enclosure: GC/ME/37/enc.1-2 Two copies of a letter from Cleveland, Cleveland House to William Lamb, second Viscount Melbourne: Palmerston’s statement about the transfer of the mission from the India Company to the British Government is perfectly correct, as is the reason for the removal of Sir John Campbell and the temporary appointment of Mr. Ellis. The real grievance, which Palmerston does not allude to, is the appointment of Mr McNeill as Ellis’s secretary, 12 Jul 1835
