PP/GC/ME/187 Letter from William Lamb, second Viscount Melbourne to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston, discussing whether it would be appropriate for the Duc de Nemours to attend the Queen’s coronation, 23 January 1838
Date:
23/01/1838
Content:
Letter from William Lamb, second Viscount Melbourne, to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston: the Queen has received a letter from Leopold asking whether it would be agreeable to her or not that the Duc de Nemours should come over to her coronation. Melbourne suggests that it would be rather awkward to settle this beforehand as they do not know what may be the feeling between the two countries at that time. Independent of any particular circumstances which may exist, Melbourne considers that the presence of a young Roman Catholic foreign prince upon such an occasion would be objectionable and would produce observation and excite alarm. 23 Jan 1838
