Letter from Sir George Cornewall Lewis, second Baronet, [Chancellor of the Exchequer], The Grove, [near Watford, Hertfordshire], to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston: he encloses a letter [not present] from Trevelyan about the appointment of a new clerk at the Treasury, to replace Mr Buchan, who has resigned. The arrangement will be convenient for the business of the office. He apologises for having been unable to attend cabinet that day and to speak to Palmerston about the messengers. 11 Jan 1856 Letter PP/GC/LE/52 also refers to the payment of the Prime Minister's messengers.
