PP/GC/LE/155 Letter from Sir G.C.Lewis to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston, regarding the temporary appointment of Grand Master of the Order of Bath, 4 January 1862
Letter from Sir George Cornewall Lewis, second Baronet, [Secretary of State for War], War Office, [London], to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston: there are precedents for appointing an acting, or temporary, Great Master of the Order of the Bath. He has always been a prince of the blood royal; Lewis has been advised to appoint the Duke of Cambridge. The terms of the warrant would make it clear that the appointment was temporary. 4 Jan 1862
