Date:
28/12/1857
Content:
Letter from Sir George Cornewall Lewis, second Baronet, [Chancellor of the Exchequer], Harpton [Court], Radnor, [Radnorshire, Wales], to Henry John Temple, third Viscount Palmerston: [Transcript] "I had already heard, before I received your letter, that the mistaken idea as to the intended assumption of the debts of the Indian government upon the English exchequer had led to gambling in Indian railway [f.1v] shares, and to an undue advance of their price. Such a mistake implies gross ignorance and a lamentable confusion of ideas - but as it seems unfortunately prevalent I have written a short explanation for THE GLOBE, which will, I hope, assist in dissipating [f.2r] the error." 28 Dec [1857]
