Description:
Southampton Time Table Calendar for September 1894
Caption:
Standard nineteenth-century jobbing printing often charted diurnal rhythms which included almanacs, calendars, and tide tables. This broadsheet was printed by Cox and Sharland, 150 High Street, successors to Thomas Gregory Gutch and Charles Cox whose partnership was established in 1870 and dissolved in 1875. Calendrical layout was challenging and required meticulous typesetting. Despite this evident skill, such objects were ephemeral productions: literally here today, gone tomorrow. The only reason this particular sheet evaded the dustbin of history is because someone decided to map the family tree, found on the reverse.
