Caption:
In later life, educator and author John Bullar (1778-1864) wrote this letter of thanks to an unidentified gentleman for the gift of a silver salver and 500 sovereigns - a small fortune - by his appreciative students. Bullar was a staunch Congregationalist, founded the Southampton branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society, advocated for a free public library, and wrote numerous books for the spa town's thriving guidebook market.
