ceded by tlie increase of its own strength. Last year this was much promoted by the soiree given by Mr. Frederic D. Mocatta, and this year the Association was enabled by the liberality of Mr. R. I). Sassoon, another of its Vice-Presidents, to repeat the experiment. Particulars of the second soiree will be found detailed hereafter.
The past year has been in many ways a most prosperous one, and the Council, in closing this portion of their report, would offer up their fervent thanks to Almighty God for the good which He has permitted them to accomplish, and express an earnest and heartfelt prayer that He will in the year which is to come, and in all future years, so prosper their efforts and guide them that their labours may be only fruitful of good, and that they may attain the lofty objects which they have in view.
I.—THE SOIREE.
The second Soiree of the Association was held on the 25th of March last, at the residence of Mr. R. D. Sassoon, and in every respect proved a brilliant success. Several addresses were delivered on the occasion by leading members of the Jewish Community, and selections of vocal .and instrumental music performed.
These entertainments are given with a view to popularize the institution, and to make the outside public better acquainted with its objects and works. They also afford opportunities for the interchange of ideas on many subjects of interest, which materially concern the well-being, advancement, and improvement both intellectual and political, of our brethren abroad.
The Soiree was attended by M. S. H. Groldschmidt on behalf of the Alliance Israelite Universelle. M. Cr^mieux, the venerable President of that body, was to have been present, but was reluctantly prevailed
