THE ROAD BY THE QUAYS
Connects the Pier, Terminus, Docks, and Floating Bridge, and running nearly due east, will be first described, as all visitors arrive at Southampton at ono or other of the above points.
A- The Royal Victoria Pier which was opened by the Duchess of Kent and Princess Victoria in 1833, is projected from the south-western extremity of this line of road, and is well constructed of timber.^ _ It was designed by the late Mr. John D. Doswell, civil engineer, and has throughout its length abroad gravelled carriage way, with a footpath on each side, forming a most delightful and fashionable promenade. Here, too, tne steamers to and from the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth come and take in and discharge passengers.
