YOUNG WOMEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION, Portland-street.
THE POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTION, which is the oldest and longest-established literary association in Southampton, having been in existence since the year 1830, is situate in Hanover-buildings. It embraces a good Library and Reading-room, both open to members from seven till ten o'clock every evening; and a museum which is accessible to members for inspection, and the use of any portion of the philosophical or other apparatus, can be obtained under certain conditions on application to the managing committee; The museum contains numerous antiquities, curiosities, and specimens in mineralogy, conchology, geology, &c. &c. Lectures on literary and scientific subjects, and occasional musical entertainments, are given in the spacious hall of the Hartley Institution, every Wednesday evening at a quarter-past eight, from the early part of September to the middle or end of April, with an interval of about four weeks at Christmas. Edwin Jones, Esq., is the president of the Institution, and its affairs are managed by a committee (including the president and other officers) of 28, who are elected annually at the general meeting of members.
SCHOOLS OF ART, in connection with the Government Art Department, are held at the Hartley Institution, under the direction of Mr. F. Langman, and at the Philharmonic Booms, under Mr. J. C. Seaward.
A SCIENCE SCHOOL in connection with the Government Science Department is also held in the Hartley Institution,
