THE YEAR AND ITS DIVISIONS.
By the addition of an extra day in Leap Year, the average length of the Common or Julian Year (Old Style, O.'S.) was brought to 365 days, 6 hours, being 11 minutes, 12 seconds more than the Solar Year. Tn 400 years this difference amounts to 3 days, 2 hours, 40 minutes, to correct which it was arranged in the Gregorian reckoning or New Style (N.S.), that in every 400 years the 100th, 200th and 300th should not be taken as Leap Years. By this the seasons and the calendars are made nearly to agree, differing only by about one day in 3,600 years.
The Gregorian, or New Style, was adopted in England in 1752, when 11 days were taken from September by calling the 3rd of that month the 14th. January 1 was then made the first day of the Civil Year, instead of March 25, as formerly.
The Ecclesiastical Year, or Year of the Church, commences with Advent Sunday.
