Elizabeth as a hunting-box ; about 1860 Viscount Palmerston purchased the house from the Crown, and it has since been restored. The old mansion was pulled down in 1600, and the present house was completed about 1576; the east staircase is probably unique; the oak panelling is of Tudor pattern and the ceilings of finely worked plaster. A portion of the parish has been assigned to the ecclesiastical parish district of St. John the Evangelist, Rownhams. and is now constituted a separate parish. The soil is gravel, sand and clay, and produces good barley, wheat and oats; subsoil, clay and gravel. The area of the united parishes is 3,520 acres.
The Hamlet of Lee was transferred from Eomsey to Nursling ecclesiastical parish by order in Council May 1929.
Upton is a hamlet, on the Romsey and Southampton road, half a mile north-east.

ROWNHAMS was formed into a civil parish by Local Government Board Order No. 36,648, dated Oct. 1st 1897, and united with that of Nursling by the County of Southampton Review Order (1932), which came into operation on April 1st 1932; it is li miles north from Nursling railway station, 4 west-by-north-west from Southampton, 3i south-east from Romsey and 3 north-east from Totton station, in the New Forest parliamentary division of the county of Hants, hundred of Buddlesgate, county court district, petty sessional division and rural deanery of Romsey, archdeaconry and diocese of Winchester; it overlooks the valley of the Test and is bounded on one side by the road from Southampton to Romsey. Rownhams was formed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1856 from the parishes of Romsey Extra, Nursling and North Baddesley. The church, dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, is a stone structure in the Decorated style, consisting of a chancel, nave, transepts, vestry, south porch and a tower with spire containing one bell and tubular chimes: in the chancel is a brass to William Oliver Colt,
founder of this church, died in 1853, and Jane, his widow, by whom the work was completed about 1856, who died in 1875: the church was consecrated in 1856. The living is a vicarage, with residence. It is in the gift of the Bishop of Winchester and has been held since 1948 by the Rev. John Haydon Yeo M.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge. Rownhams House is a mansion of brick, situated in a park of 40 acres, and is occupied by Major Richard Norman Winstanley. Earl Mountbatten of . Burma E.G., P C., G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., G.C.V.O., K.C.B., D.S.O. John Edward Arthur Willis-Fleming esq. D.L., J.P. and Peter Vaudrey-Barker-Mill esq. are the chief landowners. The chief crops are sand and gravel ; subsoil, clay.
