AND
CHUBB'S LOCKS AND SAFES.
K felt
On the night of January 31st., a desperate attempt was made upon the Dundee Bank by a set of accomplished thifcves. An iron door secured by CHUBB'S PATENT LOCK, was the principal object of attack; aftd tlfe burglars, having exhausted their skill in trying to pick this Lock, endeavoured ineffectually to destroy it by drilling. After some hours' work, they were alarmed, and made a precipitate retreat, leaving all their instruments behind them. On the previous evening the Warehouse of' Mr. Clarke, of Cross-street, Manchester, was broked into. The thieves picked eight Locks of the ordinary kind, and then, having unsuccessfully endeavoured to pick the Detector Lock on a Chubb's Fireproof Safe, they tried to force it open without avail. This is the second time this Safe has resisted the attack of
burglars.
CHUBB & SON would further add, that their Locks and'Safes have now been used for more than Thirty Years by Bankers and Merchants, the Governments of this and other Countries, and by many hundreds of thousands of individuals; and no instance has ever occurred of any robbery having taken place through their Locks having been picked, nor have the contents of any of their Safes ever been destroyed by Fire. This the Public will at once understand as the only proper test.
The Visitors to the Great Exhibition would not fail to notice the Koh-i-Noor Safe and Cage, and the Safe containing the magnificent Jewels of A. J. B. Hope, esq., m.p., both of which were manufactured by Chubb & Son. The Safe used by the Executive Committee for securing the £360,000 taken as admission money, was also made by them.
A decided testimony in favour of the efficiency of Chubb's Safes to preserve Books and Papers from Fire was borne by Mr. Braidwood, the Superintendent of the London Fire Brigade, at a meeting 01 the Institution of Civil Engineers, in 1849, when the subject of "Fireprooi Buildings" was under discussion. Such an opinion, founded on the great experience of this gentleman, will speak for itself.
